If you love big cuddly dogs, Scout might be your new best friend! This gorgeous 2 year-old Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix male belonged to an elderly person and was relegated to living in an outdoor pen. When his owner could no longer take care of him, Scout was surrendered to a local rescuer who then contacted us for help. Scout made the trip to Canine Lifeline so he could work on finding the perfect new home. As you can imagine, going from life in a small outdoor pen to experiencing the big wide world would be daunting for any dog and Scout is no exception. He had never walked on a leash before, lived indoors, or been exposed to crate-training. At first he seemed completely overwhelmed but now that he’s been with us for a few weeks, he is starting to relax and embrace all of the change in his life as a good thing. He is doing much better on a leash but needs daily practice in that area in order to really start walking like a pro. He is very affectionate with people and loves getting lots of hugs and belly rubs from his human pals. Scout also does well with other dogs so would likely benefit from having a canine buddy in his new home to show him the ropes. He is getting better with crate-training in his foster home and is happy as long as he has a large crate and is able to eat his meals in there. He will need to continue crate-training and housetraining in his adoptive home and would do best with a person or family who is home much of the time of work with him. Being left alone for long workdays would not benefit Scout. He also needs a home with a big yard that has a secure aboveground fence to keep him safely at home and provide him with some security. Urban living or a high-density suburban environment would be very scary for Scout. It’s going to be a real joy for his new family to turn this diamond in the rough into a confident canine good citizen. Scout weighs about 75 pounds and his adoption fee is $350. He’s neutered, heartworm negative and on monthly preventative, up to date on vaccinations including bivalent canine influenza, wormed, on flea and tick preventative, and microchipped. As part of the adoption process, all adopters must commit to a two-week adjustment period to make sure it’s a great match before the adoption is finalized. Scout is a a strikingly handsome boy. His coat is beautiful with interesting markings.
We cannot imagine how difficult it was for him to live his life in an outdoor pen without the benefit of interaction with caring people. However, he has been learning that there are many caring people who want to help him find a loving home.
When his photos (above) were being taken, he was initially unsure what was happening but he gradually began to relax and appreciate being hugged and petted. He was really quite well-behaved through the entire process.
Scout has been adjusting to his new world and is learning to trust. He will be an outstanding dog with consistent training, practice and patience.
